EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL

Companionship that supports stability and well-being

An emotional support animal may ease symptoms through its presence, but it does not have the same public-access status as a service animal under the ADA.

01

What is an ESA?

Emotional support animals provide companionship connected to a disability-related need. They do not need training for a specific task and may be different species, subject to a reasonable assessment.

  • The primary benefit comes from companionship.
  • There is no automatic access to restaurants, stores, or hotels.
  • Housing rules differ from public-access rules.
02

Housing documentation

When the disability or need is not apparent, a housing provider may request reliable information confirming the disability-related need. An online purchase or private card alone does not guarantee an accommodation.

03

Travel and public places

U.S. airlines are not required to treat ESAs as service animals. Check each airline’s pet policy and your destination’s requirements before traveling.
